Unlock locked ECU files

A locked controller will not let you write a modified calibration back to the vehicle. The hptbin app applies the correct unlock for your ECU family, GPEC, GM T87A or Ford MD1, so the file opens, edits and flashes normally. Included in the Pro subscription.

What an ECU unlock does

GPEC controllers ship with the calibration area protected. Depending on the tool you run, a locked file may open read-only, may refuse to open at all, and will not accept a modified write. That protection lives in the file, not in your software — which is why updating your tuning suite does not clear it.

The unlock changes the protection state of the read you send us and nothing else. Your calibration is preserved bit-for-bit, so the file you get back is the same tune you sent, in a form your equipment will accept. The unlock blocks used here were recovered from the original tooling and verified against real ECU files.

How it works

  1. Install the app and activate

    Download hptbin for Windows and activate your subscription key. ECU unlock is part of the Pro plan, so there is nothing to pay per ECU.

  2. Load the bench read

    Open the Unlock screen and choose the original bench-mode read. The app checks the file first and shows only the ECU families it can match, and tells you if the read is already unlocked.

  3. Unlock and save

    The unlock block for that family is applied on our server and the unlocked read is saved straight to your machine. The calibration is untouched: tables, maps and identifiers come back exactly as they went in. Keep your original read as a backup.

Please read before you start. This works on bench-mode reads of the ECU. Your file is sent over HTTPS, unlocked on our servers and returned to the app; it is never kept afterwards. Unlocking is only offered where it is legal to do so, and some vehicles and regions are out of scope. You are responsible for how an unlocked file is used, including local law and emissions regulations. Keep your original ECU read as a backup.
